Tesco has moved into the digital music industry with an online downloading service to compete with Apple’s iTunes.

Tesco’s service is being launched today and will cost 79p per track for downloads, which is the same price as the service offered by Apple.

However, in contrast to Apple downloads, which can only be used with the Apple iPod music device, music downloaded via the Tesco site can be played on over 70 different digital music players.

Tesco is the first UK supermarket to offer digital downloads from its web site but digital music services have also recently been launched by MVC, part of the Woolworths Group. HMV is also expected to invest in this service later in the year, according to newspaper reports.
