The Co-operative Group has hit its target of raising £5m for its charity of the year Carers Trust.
The society named the charity, which provides breaks, information, advice and support for 14-25-year-olds facing the challenge of caring, as its charity of the year in January last year.
Co-op staff raised the amount through a series of activities including mountain climbing, abseiling, marathon running, sky diving and in-store events.
“There are young people in our communities taking on incredible levels of practical and emotional caring responsibilities, often at the expense of their own schooling, further education and aspirations, who desperately need our support,” said Michael Fairclough, The Co-op Group’s head of community and co-operative investment.
“I am extremely proud of the fantastic commitment and support shown by The Co-operative’s staff, members and customers whose fundraising feats will make a difference to the lives of thousands of young adult carers who care, unpaid, for a family member or loved one.”
Thea Stein, CEO of Carers Trust, added: “Staff at The Co-operative have involved their local communities and really highlighted the issue of young adult carers – a group that has until recently fallen between two services: adult carers and young carers.
“I am delighted to say that the money raised is already making a difference with young people across the country telling us how thrilled they are that this hidden issue is now being recognised.”
The figure was revealed at a special fundraising event attended by Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal, president of Carers Trust (pictured).
