Asda has revealed its worst quarterly performance to date

Asda offered the lowest price on 24 items, with 15 of these exclusively cheapest

Asda has claimed a second consecutive pricing win, taking its overall total for the Grocer 33 year far into double figures and well clear of its rivals.

At £58.01, Asda was £2.97 cheaper than this week’s runner-up Morrisons. The Walmart-owned retailer this week posted its statutory annual results for the year to 31 December, showing a 1.6% increase in like-for-like sales and a 6.7% jump in pre-tax profits.

This week it offered the lowest price on 24 items, with 15 of these exclusively cheapest. These included the Pink Lady apples, mushrooms, pitta bread and rice, as well as branded lines such as the Andrex toilet tissue, Old El Paso soft tortillas and Hellmann’s mayonnaise.

The Grocer reported last week Morrisons had increased prices on more than 1,000 food and drink lines across its ambient, chilled and frozen aisles since the end of July. This week’s basket was 0.8% more expensive year on year and 0.7% more than last month. It did, however, offer the lowest price on eight lines and was exclusively so on the Birds Eye fish fingers and Bottlegreen pressé.

Tesco came in £4.01 more expensive than Asda at £62.02. It offered the cheapest price for 12 lines and was exclusively cheapest for the lasagne sheets and New York Bakery Co bagels, and carried the most promotions with 13 deals.

Sainsbury’s came in £7.79 more expensive than its former merger partner Asda at £65.80. While it was cheaper than its rivals for the ham and Müller Corner, it was also the only store not to have a deal on the Cheerios, making it at least £1.37 more expensive. The other three members of the big four also had an offer on the Yellow Tail shiraz, while it had just come off deal at Sainsbury’s.
