Sainsbury’s Strathaven supermarket was ‘really bright and welcoming’

In a week of poor availability, Sainsbury’s Strathaven took the win with just two items out of stock, as well as excellent service and store standards.

The car park gave a good first impression, being “a good size and well laid out”. Inside, the store was “really bright and welcoming” with good stock levels. Staff were busy restocking while keeping trolleys out of the way of customers.

The bakery counter was “nicely set out with a small fridge with fresh cream cakes”, while the overall layout of the store was logical and intuitive.

Shop floor service scored full marks thanks to “very helpful” staff, who were easy to find throughout the store and either directed our shopper to the correct items or explained they were unavailable.

Checkout service was good, with just a two-to-three minute wait at the till. The queues were well managed, and a new till was opened to help as the store became busier. The cashier was “very friendly” and took care with the shopping.

Two items were out of stock, and three not stocked, leading to the highest availability this week. Our shopper was “very pleasantly surprised by the range of items stocked in this store as it seemed quite small”.

Close behind was Waitrose Twyford. The store scored full marks on service and had excellent store standards and checkout experience. First impressions were good, as the shelves “looked attractive and fully stocked whilst the store felt clean and well managed”.

Staff were easy to find, “very friendly” and helped our shopper locate products. There were plenty of checkouts open, meaning our shopper queued for only two or three minutes. The checkout assistant was “incredibly friendly, happy to engage in conversation”.

The Waitrose store fell short on availability, however, with zero marks on this front.

Third place went to Tesco Bridlington. The store had excellent service, and all the staff approached were “very helpful”, going back to check for stock or looking up products to locate them.

Our shopper was “impressed” by the number of staff on duty, and all staff members spoken to were “pleasant and helpful”.

The store was busy but the queues were well managed, and our shopper waited just two-to-three minutes to be served. The checkout assistant greeted our shopper, handled products carefully, and checked if our shopper needed bags.

Tesco was second on availability, but still did poorly, with four out-of-stock items.

Fourth place went to Asda Torquay. It scored full marks on shop floor service, thanks to  helpful, friendly and professional staff who made it “a pleasure to shop”.

Staff either walked our shopper to the correct product, or offered information on whether it was stocked.

Service on the checkout was also excellent. However, only two of the four manned checkouts were open, leading to a four-to-five minute wait. Availability was also very low: six items were out of stock, and one not stocked.

Last place went to Morrisons with 38 points. It scored zero for availability, with lots of “empty shelves”, three items out of stock and five not stocked. The layout was “OK” but not particularly intuitive. Nothing grabbed our shopper’s attention in terms of promotions.

Checkout service was poor, with the checkout assistant failing to carefully handle products, or ask for our shopper’s loyalty card.
