Tesco’s Tidworth store provided an ‘overall good shopping experience’

This week’s winner on service and availability was Tesco Tidworth, which gave our shopper an “overall good experience”.

Every staff member our shopper spoke to was “polite and helpful”, and staff were easy to find, earning the store full marks on shop floor service.

Store standards were also high. The entrance was clean and tidy, brightened up with a display of flowers.

The end of aisle displays were “well stocked and appealing”, while the fruit and vegetable section was “inviting”.

There was no queue at the checkout, and the checkout assistant was polite and efficient.

However, it fell down on availability: five items were out of stock and four not stocked.

Close behind was Sainsbury’s Chesham with 68 points. The entrance was welcoming, thanks to colourful flowers and produce counters, and the store was clean.

However, there were a number of trollies strewn about and the store layout was not particularly intuitive.

Our shopper struggled to find the eggs or a member of staff to help. Staff members, however, were very helpful when found.

There was no queue at the checkout and the assistant was “friendly and pleasant”.

Availability was the best of the week, with just three items out of stock.

Third place went to Morrisons Yeadon with 61 points.

Store standards were generally good, and the store was mainly clean and tidy except for the odd piece of litter.

The store had a logical and intuitive layout with good signage. However, the rotisserie counter was completely empty and some of the other counters had noticeable gaps.

Staff were all helpful and friendly, and were easy to identify. They helped our shopper find missing items and checked whether items were out of stock.

Our shopper had to wait six to seven minutes for a checkout, but the checkout assistant was polite and friendly: “He didn’t make too much conversation, but he was very efficient.”

Four items were out of stock and one was not stocked.

Fourth-placed Waitrose Bridport scored full marks on shop floor service. Staff were readily available, with at least one staff member in every aisle. They were happy to assist our shopper in finding products.

However, the store layout was difficult to navigate. The food-to-go area was nearly empty and the meat and fish counters were half empty.

There was also a spillage in the milk section, but a staff member was cleaning the area.

Our shopper had to wait four to five minutes to be served at checkout. On the plus side, the assistant was “very friendly” and handled items with care.

Availability was very poor, with six items out of stock and one not stocked.

Last place was Asda Blackburn with just 40 points.

The store had “average” store standards and no small trolleys left to do shopping. The layout was not particularly logical or intuitive; our shopper found it difficult to find all the items.

The store was busy with narrow aisles. “I found I was having to wait for aisles to clear,” said our shopper.

Staff were somewhat helpful in locating items, but none wore name badges and all had different uniforms on.

Our shopper had to wait two to three minutes to be served at the checkout, but the assistant was efficient.

Availability was low, with five items out of stock and one not stocked.
