Asda and the Co-operative Group were most on the lips of suppliers when it came to naming the six best buyers in the bread and pastry category. Gill Woodfield and Adele Balmforth from the Co-op Group were both mentioned. Balmforth was praised by one company for her “desire and willingness to work with suppliers on category initiatives”. Woodfield was similarly complimented for working closely with suppliers as well as for her grasp of practical realities. “She is operationally as well as commercially minded,” said a manufacturer.

Asda’s Amanda Peberdy received several nominations. One manufacturer said: “She’s a strong strategic thinker with a positive
view of both branded and own label innovation.” The ability to react quickly to enquiries was something for which Waitrose’s James Dickson was commended. One supplier said he could be trusted to stick to deadlines: “James reacts quickly and does what he says he’ll do.”

Andrew Clegg, from Morrisons, makes his second appearance in Six of The Best. “He has a tough negotiating style, but is fair in the way he deals with suppliers,” said one company.

Finally, Somerfield’s Gavin O’Reilly was highlighted for practicality and open-mindedness. One manufacturer said: “He listens to the category argument and the data and has a straightforward, pragmatic approach.”
