Waitrose has made Rupert Thomas central buyer for one of its core grocery divisions.
His responsibilities include home baking, condiments, spices and packet sauce, sugar, pasta, rice and pulses. He will also manage buying for canned fish and meat, oils, pickles and dressings.
Thomas' appointment follows Waitrose's move to slim its grocery buying departments from four to three last year. Norman Freeman continued as central buyer for biscuits and confectionery. Jackie Wharton became central buyer for juice, soft drinks, cereals, canned foods, beverages, snacks and ambient desserts.
Wharton combines the previous roles of Gordon Fairbrother, who is now central buyer for fruit, and Paul Walker, who moved on to become central buyer for chilled prepared foods.
