?The September launch of Carib was designed to appeal to people returning from Caribbean summer holidays, but it was probably a little late. For me, Carib is a great barbecue accompaniment. The product is light and refreshing, but with a 5.2% abv, there is sufficient bite to complement barbecued meat and poultry dishes. The well-balanced hops and malt combination helps create an authentic and well-established feel that could have legs in the speciality market.

?Carib has an appealing look about it. I liked the unfussy label, which I think made the lager look quite classy. The product did not let me down when I sampled it. The taste was light, refreshing and extremely moreish. I am not surprised that it is a popular option in the Caribbean. It comes across as a good thirst-quencher. With its refreshing qualities, Carib would also make a good accompaniment to hot and spicy foods. However, there is a lot of competition and good brands in the lager market.

Today's price: £6.99

Acid test verdict: 39/50

Gran Campo Viejo Cava was launched last year to exploit the growth of the UK sparkling wine market. The tipple has made a good job of it so far, with sales "exceeding expectations", according to brand owner Pernod Ricard, and has gained two key off-trade listings in Sainsbury's and Threshers. In the recent New Wave Spanish Wine Awards, Gran Campo Viejo Cava was shortlisted from more than 800 entrants as one of the current best 100 wines available in the UK off-trade. It was one of only two Cavas that were selected.
