Sir; The British Retail Consortium’s code of practice to tackle misuse of disabled parking bays (The Grocer, July 10, p9) is disappointing.
While we welcome anything that helps disabled customers to park in bays allocated to them, the guidance merely suggests approaches that have been used
before and are not very effective unless they are supplemented by additional measures.
A survey of 800 supermarket car parks by Baywatch in January showed that 21% of disabled parking bays were occupied by cars not displaying a disabled badge. We want something more robust, with more advice for retailers.
It contains nothing about the importance of challenging the abuse, the need to allocate resources or the use of technology to combat the abuse - and nothing about the requirements on retailers under the Disability Discrimination Act, nor indeed the economic advantages of attracting disabled customers.
