The Greencore Group has promoted marketing controller Richard Esau to the new position of director of marketing at Hazlewood Sandwiches.

Esau has been working for the company for the past four years and has been responsible for overseeing the development of the marketing function.

He previously held marketing and commercial positions at Iceland and the CRS.

The move follows last month’s announcement that Simon Wookey would replace Mike Upton as MD of the sandwich business in 2005, when Upton retires (The
Grocer, July 26, p16). In the meantime, Wookey will become deputy managing director in early 2004.

Sales and marketing director Phil Taylor is replacing Wookey as MD of Hazlewood Chilled Meals on September 1.

Upton said “Our future development plans clearly indicate the increasing importance of strategic marketing to maximise opportunities and to develop our business across the category.

“Esau’s appointment will help us to maintain and strengthen our position in the sandwich market.”

The Greencore Group said further announcements will be made later in the year regarding additional strengthening of Hazlewood Sandwiches’ marketing department.
