The Food Standards Agency has named the site in Spain it believes is responsible for the recent salmonella outbreak in the UK.

The outbreak, blamed on imported eggs sold through the foodservice sector, may have been sparked by eggs from the Granja Avícola ‘El Angel’ site in Spain.

The agency also sought to reassure consumers about the safety of UK eggs.

“The majority of eggs on sale in shops in the UK are of UK origin, and recent surveys have shown there is a very low incidence of salmonella in UK eggs,” the body said. “Even so, it isn’t possible to guarantee that any egg will be free from salmonella, whatever the source or brand.”
