Retailers are being warned in a government awareness campaign launched this week to look out for fake IDs when the first National Identity Cards hit the streets next month.

The cards, which can be used as proof of age and are designed to stamp out identity fraud, will make their debut in Manchester and be rolled out across the rest of the UK over the next three years.

"The cards are virtually impossible to fake, but we need retailers to know what to look out for," said a Home Office spokesman.

The National Federation of Retailers & Newsagents welcomed the move. "We are always looking for new ways for the public, especially those who appear to be under the age of 18, to prove their identity," said a spokesman .

Use of the cards will be voluntary for UK nationals but compulsory for foreign nationals working or studying in the UK.
