The Bakers Oven is set to disappear from the high street when owner Greggs rebrands the 165-store chain under its own fascia.

The chain was formed in the 1930s and was bought by Greggs from Allied Bakeries in 1994.

Rebranding the stores would allow Greggs to simplify its business and prepare for expansion, said Greggs CEO Ken McMeikan.

"There are significant opportunities for additional Greggs shops across the whole of the UK, particularly in the south of England and the north west," he added.

"Greggs will continue to move into more locations away from high streets and shopping malls, where it can serve its customers at work and as they travel, though it will continue to open new shops on high streets as well."

Sales rose 6.6% in the 25 weeks to 6 December, with like-for-like sales up 3.8%, it announced.
