Gardner quits FSA

Alan Gardner has resigned as a board member of the Food Standards Agency with immediate effect. The FSA said Gardner, who was appointed to the board in January, stepped down because he was unable to attend a number of FSA meetings, and wanted to make way for someone more able to contribute fully. Deirdre Hutton, chair of the FSA, said: "I would like to thank Alan for his thoughtful contributions to the board in support of Welsh consumers."

Cox joins HBJ

HBJ Wines & Spirits has appointed Graham Cox as director of national accounts, in order to increase HBJ's focus on the off-trade. Cox joins HBJ following a five-year stint at Berkmann Wine Cellars where he was a national account manager and agency sales manager, overseeing accounts such as Waitrose, Tesco, Majestic Wine and Oddbins.

New role for Duncan

Northumbria Larder, the regional food and drink group for the north east of England, has appointed Sandy Duncan to the new role of general manager. She has been in charge of business development there for the past three years. Frances Rowe, rural and environment manager for RDA One NorthEast, said: "Sandy has played a key role in Northumbria Larder, establishing a strong reputation in the regional food and drink sector."

Porritt back as chair

Jonathon Porritt has been reappointed as chair of the Sustainable Development Commission. Porritt was initially appointed chair in July 2000 and will lead the commission for a further three years. David Miliband, secretary of state for environment, said: "Jonathan's vision and drive remain essential to help government, businesses and communities across the UK achieve sustainability."
