After more than 120 years producing only salt, the Essex-based Maldon Crystal Salt Company is diversifying into premium organic pepper, herbs and spices.
The company, which is highly regarded by chefs for its flaky-textured Maldon sea salt, plans to launch the Organic Food Federation-certified premium peppercorns this autumn.
Sourced in Kerala, Southern India, they will be sold in 40g foil sealed packs with an rsp of £2.50 to £2.75. Maldon Salt MD
Steven Osborne said: “We realised there were no really good quality peppercorns on the market so we decided to source our own. This is a really exciting new avenue for us and we’re confident that the peppercorns are the finest to be found and equal in quality to our salt.”
The launch would kick off a wider extension of Maldon Salt’s range, he said. “There will be herbs and spices coming out as well, 10 of each, all organic.”
He added that the company was in the process of building new production facilities in Maldon to increase its sea salt production from the current 600 tonnes a year.
