Supermarket customer magazines are becoming a substitute for the paid-for news stand practical monthlies', such as Good Housekeeping, BBC Good Food and Prima, according to a new report by Redwood Publishing. In 1997, 1.87m people bought one of the above titles each month. In 2002 this had dropped to 1.4m ­ a fall of 25%.
During the same period, readership of customer magazines from Safeway, Sainsbury and Somerfield grew 19%, from 7.1m to 8.5m.

n Time Out push
London what's on guide Time Out is being promoted in July and August via a London Underground poster campaign. In addition there will be 300,000 postcards given out as well as 3,000 flowers distributed around tube stations. Flowers will have a tag flagging up buy one get one free' deals for London attractions. Shelf talkers and window stickers are available for retailers.

n Well Judged
Cult comic 2000 AD has a summer special edition, on sale July 23. The 32-page edition has a premium cover featuring new drawings from artist Henry Flint. It will contain extra pages and a fold-out A2 poster of Judge Dredd and Judge Death.

n Tech launch
Dennis Publishing is launching a new monthly computer title, Custom PC, on sale at the end of August. The title is aimed at PC enthusiasts, with the emphasis on hardware and customisation.

n Travel title
The Observer is to publish a second travel magazine. The September issue will be a 68-page tabloid-sized glossy colour title.

n Women power
According to the latest Insight report, the magazine market is up 0.41% in value (up 3.53% for the top 15) in the year to April 2003 compared to the previous year. Women's weeklies had the best growth.
