Food industry stalwart Rob Mullen has launched a new business that aims to help new and existing brands find a home on supermarket shelves.

Mullen, who has worked for a number of companies and brands during a 25-year career including McCain, Ross Foods and Rank Hovis claimed NewLeaf would be a "breath of fresh air for the UK food industry".

The business would build brands that had struggled to find a way to market, often because they hadn't been able to make the necessary investment, and transform their prospects, said Mullen, who takes up the role of managing director.

"By working in partnership with food manufacturers from the UK and abroad and helping to develop and improve their products, NewLeaf is able to tailor brands to meet the needs of a particular market and consumers," he said.

"We are prepared to take a gamble on products with prospects."

The north east-based sales executive has assembled an experienced 10-strong team that includes: brand designer Nick Pugh, who has worked on Penn State Pretzels, Carrs and Ross Pickles; Ian Humpish, who set up the Roundhouse Design Studio with Pugh in 1995; and Caroline Dale, who has 15 years' experience in marketing and retail, much of it with the multiple, independent and wholesale sectors.

"We are in it for the long term, working with producers on associated products, expanding the ranges, increasing sales volumes and adding real value to their company," said Mullen.
