The Welsh Whisky Company has unveiled details of the first single malt to be made in Wales for over a century.
Penderyn will go on sale through selected specialists from St David’s Day on 1 March. Made from Welsh spring water in the village of the same name, Penderyn has been matured in Bourbon casks and finished in Madeira barrels. Initially, only 6,000 bottles of four-year-old malt will be available for £29.99.
In a bid to produce a “purer” spirit, the Welsh Whisky Company said it only distilled the spirit once rather than twice, which is the norm in Scotland, using water from the Brecon Beacons.
The privately owned company hopes the single malt will revive Wales’ tradition of distilling whisky. The 46% abv spirit joins Brecon Premium Vodka, Brecon Dry Gin and Merlyn Welsh Cream Liqueur in the firm’s portfolio.
