Thirteen staff dismissed by Dunnes Stores during an industrial dispute in the Irish Republic have been awarded substantial compensation for being unfairly sacked. The awards, made by the Irish Employment Appeals Tribunal, averaged I£5,400, the largest made by the tribunal in recent years. The 13, who worked in Galway store, were dismissed last year in a dispute over training of new staff. The tribunal was sharply critical of the company's personnel procedures at the store, describing them as "not worthy of a fair and reasonable employer". Meanwhile, 33 Tesco workers are pursuing a compensation case claiming they were never supplied with contracts setting out their terms of employment at a Dublin store, as required in Irish labour law. Their claim has already been dismissed by a labour rights commissioner, who ruled last year that Tesco had not broken the law. The workers are asking the Employment Appeals Tribunal to overturn that decision. {{NEWS }}
