Stuart Neame, vice-chairman of Kent brewer and pub operator Shepherd Neame, has resigned after a dispute with the board about the future direction of the business.

He has worked for the company for 31 years and has been on the board for 27 years.

It is understood that he wanted the firm to be divided up to make the most of its property portfolio and generate rent from its pub sites.

The majority of the board, however, wanted the company to maintain direct involvement in brewing, off-trade and on-trade activities. Speaking after the company’s annual general meeting, managing director and Stuart’s cousin Jonathan Neame said Stuart’s proposals for Shepherd Neame’s future development were based on “fag packet economics”.

In a statement, Shepherd Neame, which produces brands such as Spitfire and Bishops Finger, said: “The board has accepted his resignation and would like to pay tribute to the contribution Stuart has made to the business during his years of service with the company, which he joined in 1972.”
