Smiths News is hunting for a new finance director following the news that Alan Humphrey is to retire.

Humphrey is stepping down after nearly three decades with the business and its former parent, WH Smith.

In a separate move, commercial director Jon Bunting is promoted to chief operating officer and will join the board of the news wholesaler from 1 April.

Smiths chief executive Mark Cashmore said paid tribute to Humphrey’s " tireless dedication and commitment” and praised Bunting as “instrumental” in maintaining the group’s “high level of commercial success”.

Smiths was boosted last year by snapping up several contracts from defunct rival Dawson News – but posted a drop in like-for-like sales in its latest results in January.
