Wall’s has launched its first scotch egg with a high-protein claim, plus an “improved crumb” recipe for its original scotch egg.
Wall’s High Protein Scotch Egg is available now in Sainsbury’s stores (rsp: £1.50/113g).
With 15g of protein per 113g serving, the high-protein scotch egg contains 25% more protein than Wall’s original scotch egg, which provides 12g of protein per 113g serving.
It is able to carry a high-protein claim because more than 20% of its energy is derived from protein.
The higher protein content comes from cannellini beans and a wholewheat crumb added to the recipe, according to Wall’s brand owner The Compleat Food Group.
Cannellini beans were “naturally rich in protein and a source of fibre, helping enhance the product’s nutritional profile and creating a more balanced offering without compromising on quality or taste”, said Jason Manley, brand director at The Compleat Food Group.
“As the UK’s number one scotch egg brand, we’re constantly looking at how we can evolve the category and respond to changing consumer needs,” he said. “Protein remains one of the most powerful drivers of food and snacking choices, so we’re excited to bring shoppers the first-ever High Protein Scotch Egg.”
It comes afters Wall’s launched a high-protein sausage roll in April.
Half of the sales of the new sausage roll had come from shoppers new to the category, Wall’s said, citing NIQ data. This demonstrated the “appetite for protein-enhanced versions of familiar savoury snacks”, it added.
Wall’s has also updated the recipe for its original scotch egg with an “improved crumb” and the addition of a “signature seasoning blend”.
The reformulation formed part of the brand’s “commitment to continually elevating the category and reinforcing its market-leading position”, it said.
