Stans Superstore has secured a second store.

The Shropshire-based independent supermarket has had an offer accepted on a disused car showroom and filling station in Llangollen, Clwyd.

"Our offer has been accepted and we're currently drawing up plans for the store," said director Andrew Faulks. "All being well, we hope to open by the summer. The people of Llangollen haven't had fuel for about seven years, and the nearest petrol station is about four to five miles away, so we're looking forward to opening there."

He added that the store would be 3,000 sq ft and named Stans of Llangollen. There would also be a petrol station and parking for about 10 to 12 cars.

The Grocer revealed in January that Stans, which is the only remaining one-store outfit on The Grocer's ranking of the Top 50 independent grocery retailers, was searching for another store to combat ever-increasing competition in the Oswestry area.

"We have never ruled out acquiring a second store, depending on price and location," said Faulks at the time. "With all the new competition, maybe the time is right."

Tesco, Morrisons and discounter Home Bargains opened stores in Oswestry in July, the latter in the former Woolworths. Stans Superstore is ranked number 42 on the Top 50, with sales of £17.2m.
