Sir; There have been statements in the trade press about bad harvests leading to higher grain prices which feed through to substantial increases in the retail price of a loaf.
The price of flour is but one element of the cost of the loaf that eventually arrives in the shop.
Like the majority of people I do not have any information on the relative significance of the various elements that make up the cost of a loaf.
However, common sense would suggest that other production costs and distribution costs account for most of the cost of a loaf.
The increase in grain prices should only justify a marginal increase in the price of a loaf.
Can one or more of the major bread producers provide information on the costs of bread production and distribution in order to substantiate the, perhaps, dubious argument that grain price rises justify yet another hike in bread prices?
