The Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers has the backing of 250,000 people in a petition to ban larger stores from opening on Christmas Day in England and Wales.

USDAW has campaigned for a long time to ban larger stores from opening on Christmas Day, so that shopworkers can be guaranteed the day off to spend with their families.

Labour MP for Durham North, Kevan Jones, is to introduce a Private Members’ Bill that should see legislation introduced in time for Christmas Day 2004.

The first reading of his Bill will take place in the House of Commons on January 7.
