United Wholesale Grocers, which specialises in selling to retailers, is considering diversifying into the catering market.
The wholesaler is looking to add lines aimed at caterers to its depot in Polmadie in Glasgow.
The foodservice market in Glasgow offers greater opportunities than grocery for retailers, said trading controller Rahan Ali-Irshad.
"We are carrying out studies to check it is feasible and are working closely with our buying group, Landmark, who are advising us," he said. "We feel the Polmadie depot is in a great location to service Glasgow and could be used by caterers as well as retailers, and this is potentially a big market for us."
Plans are being drawn up by brothers Nabeel Ramzan, MD, and Amaan, operations director, who took over the running of the business earlier this year.
"Their vision is to make UWG the number one in Glasgow, increase its profitability and take the business to the next level," said Ali-Irshad. "They are ambitious and energetic and are willing to try new things."
UWG's turnover was £76.6m and its pre-tax profits were £292,000 according to the most recent accounts available, for the year ending December 2007.
