Suffolk meat processor Wessex Foods has been hit by a fire at its plant in Lowestoft.

The blaze broke out yesterday evening, causing severe damage at the factory, where 150 staff work. Firefighters were still battling to put out the fire this morning.

"The building is designed to keep foodstuffs cool so there's a large number of rooms, each of which is well insulated and this means the area burns readily,” Kevin Burden of Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service told the BBC.

"They then collapse, leaving the fire to burn underneath the rubble of the building structure."
