US: Amazon.com has launched same-day delivery for groceries in its home city of Seattle and has expanded same-day delivery on books and electronics in six other cities. Amazon Fresh was launched in 2007 and sells a range of groceries including frozen, but no fresh produce at this stage. It is only available in Seattle, but Amazon, the world's largest online retailer, has hinted it's looking to invest more in expanding the service.

HUNGARY: Rewe Group has opened two new Penny Market stores in the first stage of its plans to open 250 stores in the country. It currently has 176 stores and is seeking to expand to 250 in the medium term. Penny Market entered Hungary in 1996 and is the country's biggest discounter.

RUSSIA: Carrefour is to withdraw from Russia, just four months after opening its first hypermarket in Moscow. The retailer said there was an "absence of sufficient organic growth prospects and acquisition opportunities in the short to medium term." Consumer spending in Russia has suffered in the recession following a boom in recent years. Carrefour said its strategy was only to enter markets where it could be market leader. The retailer denied previous reports that it was planning to withdraw from other emerging markets.

CHINA: Korea's biggest retailer Lotte Shopping is to acquire Chinese hypermarket chain Times for KRW730bn (£374m), subject to government approval. The deal will enable Lotte Shopping to expand its reach in China. The retailer beat off competition from retailers including Wumart Stores, Dairy Farms International Holdings and c-store chain 7-Eleven. Carrefour was also understood to have been interested, but did not bid because it was concerned its strong presence in the region would have barred any deal. Lotte Shopping secured the deal despite not offering the highest price as it was willing to pay cash.

FRANCE: A Lidl store on the outskirts of Paris was this week held up by masked men who took up to six people hostage. French news reports said the motive for the raid in Sevran, north of the capital, was unclear.
