FRANCE: Carrefour has reported a half-year loss of 58.1m (£50.9m) against profits of 747m (£654m) in the same period last year. One-off charges in the six months to the end of June were 511m (£447m), much of which were write-downs linked to Finiper in Italy. Group sales slipped 1.6% to 41.3bn (£36.2bn).

"In a challenging environment, Carrefour posted resilient first-half sales and market share gains, notably in France," said chief executive Lars Olofsson. "With focused and determined management and mobilised teams, we are on track to deliver our 2009 objectives and execute our transformation plan."

US: Wal-Mart is selling goods from other retailers through a new section of its website called Wal-Mart Marketplace. The section was launched this week with a million new lines from retailers picked by Wal-Mart for their customer service and wide selection. Home and baby company CSN Stores, luggage group eBags and sportswear retailer Pro Team have signed up, with more due next year.

"We've added nearly a million new items online with Wal-Mart Marketplace, making it even easier for customers to find what they want on walmart.com," said chief marketing officer Kerry Cooper.

BELGIUM: Delhaize has exited the German market after selling its four stores in the country to Rewe Group a deal first agreed in July. Delhaize entered Germany in 2003 but last year posted a loss against local sales of just under £20m.

FRANCE: Auchan has reported a drop in profits for the first half of the year, although sales remained stable. Net profits fell 17.8% year-on-year to 143m (£125m), while revenues edged up 0.4% to 18.7bn (£16.3bn). Auchan said its profits were hit by write-downs linked to investments and loss of value on debts issued by the group. Sales in France totalled 8.9bn 47% of total revenue.

"We cannot content ourselves for long with flat performances and a fall in income," said group chairman Christophe Dubrulle. "We shall approach the second half with even greater attention to safeguarding our overall financial balances."
