SWA chief executive Colin Smith hoped a specialist academy would help inspire the next generation of wholesalers in Scotland

The Scottish Wholesale Association has outlined plans to create a training academy in a bid to raise standards and promote careers in the sector.

SWA chief executive Colin Smith said he wanted to create a specialist academy to help inspire the next generation of wholesalers in Scotland.

The ex-regional manager of Best-One said the creation of a new training academy would nurture talent and provide training to enhance skills and raise standards within the sector, while promoting wholesale as a viable career path.

“The SWA wants to work with our members to create a legacy that helps inspire the next generation of wholesalers and gets the message cross that wholesale is not just about shifting boxes,” said Smith. “We are the wheels of the food and drink industry and keep it on the move. We want to enable all wholesalers to train, retain and attract the people who are future leaders and the lifeblood of the sector.”

The SWA is working with key stakeholders to help deliver Ambition 2030, the Scottish government-supported initiative to double Scotland’s food and drink turnover to £30bn by 2030.
