Waitrose is launching a Scotch whisky after taking a break from the own-label market for three years for cost and supply reasons.
The 40% abv Waitrose Blended Scotch Whisky (rsp: £12.15/70cl) is made in the Scottish Highlands by Whyte & Mackay and launches into 267 stores and on Waitrose Wine Direct from 24 October.
The spirit is a three-year-old blend of Highland, Speyside, Lowlands and Islay single malts and Scottish grain whisky aged in American oak casks. It has a golden colour and a "mellow nose and spicy richness on the palate", according to the retailer, which plans to expand its own-label whisky range next year.
Waitrose spirits buyer Herchelle Perez Terrado said the retailer had stepped back from own-label after a resurgence in demand for whisky in the Far East had caused stock and price challenges.
