Makro is forging ahead with its aggressive recruitment strategy by appointing Peter Foster as head of field operations.

Makro MD Hannes Floto told The Grocer last week that the cash & carry giant had invested in recruiting staff at senior management and depot level over the past year. This was being done to tackle the business's widening losses and transform the 33-strong chain into a wholesaler for the hotel, restaurant and catering trade.

Foster's immediate responsibility will be to introduce Christmas-related promotions, but he will also be responsible for developing relationships with key hotel, restaurant and catering customers.

He has previously worked for Booker International and Dutch retailer Royal Ahold.

"It's an exciting time to be joining Makro because the business has a new focus and a clear direction," he said. "I'm looking forward to developing a field operations team that has new goals and challenges as we look to engage with customers on a more direct and personal level."

Floto added: "Peter is one of our appointments that follows our drive to attract the right people in the right positions who can help us achieve our goal of being the first choice cash & carry."

Earlier this month Makro reported losses of £19.4m on sales down 10.9% to £924m for the year to 31 December.
