Tiger Foodservice

Hyperama has sold its foodservice business Tiger Foods to Birmingham-based Giro Foods.

The deal means Tiger will return to buying group Unitas after Hyperama switched its foodservice operations to Caterforce last year.

Hyperama officially launched Tiger Foods last September, having expressed its intention to move foodservice from Unitas to Cateforce in February 2021. Hyperama has continued as a Unitas member for its cash & carry wholesale business, which accounted for the majority of its £144.6m turnover.

Tiger Foods operated from Hyperama’s 100,000 sq ft Nottingham depot and delivered to customers within a 100-mile radius. It delivered to Hyperama’s hospitality customers, offering Caterforce’s own-label Chefs’ Selections range, fresh fruit & vegetables and premium fresh meat.

Ahead of the launch last year it purchased a new fleet of 12 multi-temperature delivery vehicles ranging from 7.5 tonne to class two and introduced a new website and app.

The deal will mean a significant increase in turnover for Giro Foods, which currently has sales of around £25m per annum.

“We are pleased to announce the sale of our Tiger Foods business to Giro Foods,” said Hyperama MD Marcus Singh.

“Javed [Sarwar, Giro MD] and his family have been friends of ours for many years and this is an ideal fit which allows Hyperama to focus now on our cash & carry business. We thank all of our customers and suppliers who have helped us develop the Tiger Foods business over the years, and we wish Giro Foods continued success in the integration of Tiger Foods into the Giro Foods business and with further growing their business. Streamlining our operations in this way allows us to now concentrate on our core cash and carry business for the future.”

Sarwar said: “We are excited to announce the acquisition of Tiger Foods from Hyperama. We are very familiar with the Tiger Foods business and are delighted to have been able to secure this deal which will support our growth plans for Giro Foods. Tiger Foods has a great customer base, and this is an ideal opportunity for us to grow our business and we are looking forward to working with our customers and suppliers while we incorporate the Tiger Foods business within Giro Foods.”

Unitas Wholesale MD John Kinney added: “This is great news for Hyperama and Giro Foods, who are a long-standing Unitas member, and we look forward to working closely with Javed and the team at Giro Foods while they integrate the Tiger Foods business into their operation. We also look forward to continuing our relationship with Marcus and the Hyperama team who are now well placed to focus on their successful cash & carry business.”
