Talk about tempting fate.

No sooner had England secured the questionable glory of a high-scoring draw against the not-so-mighty Oz in the first Ashes Test from Brisbane, than Pedigree brewer Marston's which sponsors the England cricket team was rushing out pics of some Aussie-baiting beer mats celebrating the 'triumph'.

Alastair Cook deserves plenty of plaudits for his epic unbeaten 235, but slogans like 'Cook conquers Australia again' are surely begging the question with (at time of going to press) four Tests still to go.

Bearing in mind the limitless English capacity to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, Marston's risks setting up the biggest sporting anticlimax since Mars, Carlsberg and the rest convinced us England's footballing clodhoppers were cast-iron favourites to win the World Cup. And we all know how that turned out.
