Tesco magazine is 'most read printed publication' in the UK

Tesco magazine has overtaken The Sun to claim the title of most read printed publication in the UK, according to the latest report from the National Readership Survey.

Year-on-year growth of 8% during the period (October 2011 - September 2012) saw Tesco magazine reach a readership of 7.2m, compared with The Sun’s 7.1m.

Tesco’s competitor Asda magazine has 6 million readers, while Sainsbury’s magazine has 3.4 million and Your M&S 3.7 million.

“If there is one word that sums up why Tesco mag is so widely read it’s ‘relevance’, said editor Helen Johnston.

“We work hard to understand our readers’ values and priorities, so that we always create content they genuinely find useful and enjoy.”

Tesco magazine is published every two months.

  • And these figures have been taken from where?

    I do not believe that this is accurate. The publication is free and I was wisely taught many years ago that things that are free are often perceived as having no value.

    In our borough, we are 'rewarded by weight' of our recycled rubbish bin's contents. I'd bet my bottom dollar that there are many people who bag up handfuls of the Tesco magazine every time that they visit a store.

  • Let's get beyond the myth that free / brand publications have no value. The industry, and people's perceptions of it, has changed.

    @James NRS give you average issue readership, so this is comparing readership of one issue of Tesco mag with one issue of the Sun. Not perfect as you're comparing a bi-monthly with a daily, but its still the best comparator the industry has. For an advertiser wanting to know how many people might see their print ad, for instance, this is the stat that matters.

    @Esther - not true. The freemium model is thriving; just look at Stylist and Time Out.
