Booths to offer online service at MediaCity
Booths is to start selling food online for the first time next week.
The upmarket northern supermarket chain is due to open a new store in Salford Quays on Wednesday, at MediaCityUK, the new home for the BBC and ITV.
It is the retailer's first big city location. The denser population and large number of businesses on the doorstep of the new store had prompted Booths to make the move online, said chairman Edwin Booth.
If the service proved a success, the supermarket would expand it to other stores, he added. "We'll learn from this and will consider other areas where it could also work," he said. "It is likely to be better suited to bigger locations."
The retailer's online offer will initially be limited to the Manchester area surrounding the new Salford Quays store.
Similar to M&S's online service but developed primarily with corporate events in mind, it will include a range of sandwich and wrap platters as well as quiches, salads and cakes.
Booths has set up a separate website www.boothsoutside.com which had yet to go live as The Grocer went to press, but featured the message: "Coming soon from our MediaCityUK store, Booths Outside, delivering freshly prepared food straight to your office. Choose from a wide range of sandwiches, wraps, quiches and salads. Perfect for whatever business event you are planning."
The food will be prepared in the MediaCity store and delivered by electric van to any address in Salford Quays, as well as to Manchester's M1, M2 and M3 postcodes. The minimum order size will be £20 and delivery will be free of charge.
To generate publicity for the new two-storey MediaCityUK store and underline Booth's commitment to local produce and the importance of its rural roots, Edwin Booth posed outside the store with a pedigree Aberdeen Angus bull named Big Papa owned by a farmer in Stockport.
