Tesco has removed a further six products from sale as a precaution following the discovery of painkillers in its own-label chocolate & nut ice cream cones.

The retailer recalled all four packs of the 110ml chocolate & nut ice cream cones at the weekend, after tablets containing a mix of 8mg of codeine and 500mg paracetamol were found in two individual cones. The products were made by R&R Ice Cream, which produces more than half of the UK’s own-label ice cream, along with a huge range of its own-brand ice cream and licensed products.

No other Tesco or R&R Ice Cream products are affected by the recall, but the retailer has also pulled a further six own-label products manufactured by R&R from sale. “As a precaution we’ve taken them off sale,” said a spokesman. “The products have not been recalled, though.”

“We are urgently investigating this incident with our supplier and ask customers to return this product to their local store,” said the retailer, which has informed police of the matter.

R&R has 1,000 SKUs on its books and operates 100 production lines in 11 sites across Europe, including four in the UK. It produces more than 800 million litres of product every 12 months.
