Own label’s power to innovate and punch above its weight was showcased at The Grocer’s annual Own Label Food & Drink Awards. Rob Brown reports

As David Cameron was naming the key figures in his coalition cabinet last week, the best in own-label food and drink were being crowned kings and queens of their fields.

More than 350 of the industry's leading lights a record turnout gathered at The Grocer's annual Own Label Food & Drink Awards to find out which of the 130-plus finalists at this year's event had won.

They were expecting a list of outstanding winners. And thanks to the careful deliberations of the 15-strong panel of judges, which included brand development experts, design gurus and members of The Grocer's team, as well as the input from consumers polled by Cambridge Market Research, they weren't disappointed.

The field was stronger than ever this year as was the level of innovation. "It's been highly encouraging to see the quality and quantity of new product development in this year's Own Label Food & Drink Awards," said Adam Leyland, The Grocer's editor and host of the event. "The awards demonstrate that outstanding innovation is alive and well in own label."

All the finalists in this year's awards, which were sponsored by PLMA and Benson Box, won the right to add The Grocer Own Label Awards logo to their products' packaging, an invaluable USP in the war for consumer loyalty. All entrants will also get a consumer report from Cambridge Market Research. Asda's suppliers left the Wyndham Grand Hotel in Chelsea Harbour with the largest haul of medals eight coveted golds and seven silvers. Sainsbury's was second, with seven golds and three silvers, while Aldi came third, picking up three golds and five silvers.

Their achievements are all the more remarkable considering the tough economic backdrop. Although it was well-placed to weather the recession as consumers tightened their belts, the sector has come under increasing pressure from leading brands' high-visibility promotions and ad campaigns. So how has own label prevailed?

With the awards ceremony bringing together key figures from both the supplier and retailer sides of the fence, the value of strong partnerships was highlighted by celebrity chef and guest speaker Paul Merrett. "It's in the interest of all of us to support all levels of food and production in this industry. Today is a small part of that," he said. "Dare I say it, we're a coalition."

Evolution and innovation are key, adds Asda product development director Gail Paddy. Own label accounts for about half of all sales at the retailer, and is bought by 92% of its customers. "Consistently evolving and driving quality in the range is hugely important to us and we have 3,000 new lines planned for 2010," she says. "Our five-year ambition is to be the clear number two in food and these awards demonstrate we are heading in the right direction."

For own-label food supplier Greencore, which had six products shortlisted and won a gold for its Tesco Rogan Josh Cooking Sauce and a silver for its Asda Chilli Bean Soup, close collaboration with customers is vital to its progression.

"Consumers look for value, but they also want great-tasting products that offer convenience, and this is what drives our product development agenda," says spokesman Michael Evans. "One of the consequences of the downturn has been consumers trading down from eating out and seeking 'premium', convenient meal solutions at home something that Greencore has benefited from. Tiering is essential. Good/better/best propositions offer consumers choice."

And judging by the diversity of this year's winners, choice is what they're getting.
