It is the first time the discounter has launched an online grocery service

Aldi has launched its first UK online grocery service to help vulnerable customers get supplies in the coronavirus pandemic.

From tomorrow (17 April), shoppers will be able to order food parcels on Aldi’s website for home delivery.

Each parcel contains the same 22 products, including rice and pasta, UHT milk and a number of canned foods such as soup. They also include a four-pack of toilet tissue and antibacterial handwash. Orders will be limited to one per customer per week and taken at aldi.co.uk/food-parcels.

The price is £24.99 including delivery, which Aldi says will take between three and 10 days. Shoppers will get a dispatch email and updates as the delivery progresses.

Aldi’s online effort in the UK has so far been limited to its general merchandise Specialbuys, along with wine, spirits and a small number of ambient products such as coffee pods.

Its focus has remained on expanding its store network rather than branching into new areas with the online operation, which first launched in 2016.

But the pandemic, leaving many people struggling to access essentials while self-isolating, has prompted the supermarket to find new ways to reach its most vulnerable shoppers.

“We are committed to providing quick, safe and affordable access to food for all our customers and understand that, for some, visiting one of our stores is not an option at the moment,” said Aldi MD of corporate responsibility Fritz Walleczek.

Aldi also donated £250,000 to Age UK in March and has reserved the first half hour of store opening times on Mondays to Saturdays for vulnerable shoppers.
