Aldi has confirmed plans to open a new store on an Aberdeenshire site formerly occupied by the now-defunct supermarket chain Haldanes.

The German-owned discounter intends to build a new 15,070 sq ft branch on the Ythan Terrace plot in Ellon, creating 20 new jobs and 109 car parking spaces.

The site has remained unoccupied since Haldanes closed last June.

An Aldi spokesman told The Grocer that further details would be revealed during a public consultation meeting and exhibition on October 29.

Aldi currently has 406 stores in the UK and employs more than 6,200 staff.
