As Donald Trump’s tariffs make the US less predictable, China has the UK in its sights, with suppliers set to receive considerable government support. What markets are they targeting?
Food imports from China are on the rise. In half one of 2025 – when US president Donald Trump announced his sweeping ‘liberation day’ tariffs of varying rates on all imports – food and drink flowing from China to the UK rose by 17.5% to £661m [FDF].
It made China the UK’s 11th biggest food and drink importer, up one place on the previous year, as it led growth of non-EU inflows along with Canada in 19th.
“We’ve been seeing quite a steady rise in China exports to the UK, but it was the 11th-biggest import market for the first time in our H1 snapshot,” says FDF head of trade George Hyde. “China has never been that high. It’s the third largest non-EU importer behind only Brazil and the USA. It’s one of the things that really stood out in our H1 report.
