Retailers’ understanding and readiness for upcoming changes in tobacco legislation is improving, new research shows.

Insight from Japan Tobacco International’s training modules for retailers shows they are becoming more aware about the details of changes to the laws governing cigarette sales, which will come into effect next May under EU Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) reforms.

The company monitors retailers’ understanding and preparedness for the changes through its JTI Advance programme of education and training. By comparing responses to questions over a six-month period, it saw an uplift of 33% in retailer awareness of when the new legislation will come in and which products it affects. According to its own insights, 90% of retailers are now aware of when the TPD2 legislation will come into effect.

“These latest results are really encouraging and show that retailers that are using the tools made available to help them are better prepared for change. The concern is that there are some shopkeepers and assistants out there that are not yet taking full advantage of these resources,” said JTI head of communications Jeremy Blackburn.

“Whilst there is still time, I would strongly advise retailers to log on to JTI Advance and test their knowledge. JTI is here to provide support ahead of the changes and there is no easier way to get prepared than by downloading the app.”
