Supermarkets are set to offer rock bottom prices for Christmas veg, with a fierce price war poised to break out despite the backdrop of rising food inflation.

Tesco yesterday relaunched its Festive 5 promotion, with prices reduced to 29p for key Christmas ingredients.

The supermarket once again put its Farm Foods range, launched in March last year, at front and centre of the campaign, despite fresh criticism from food campaigners Feedback, as reported by The Grocer earlier this week.

The promotion includes its Redmere Farms Unpeeled Sprouts (500g), a cauliflower, Redmere Farms white Potato 2.5kg, Redmere Farms Carrots (1kg) and Redmere Farms parsnips 500g.

Tesco has taken the price down by 10p from last year when it was offering a similar range of products at 39p each, only to find itself undercut by the discounters.

The supermarket is expected to be followed by rivals including Aldi, which last year offered its Super Six at Christmas for just 19p, and Lidl, which was 29p last year.

Asda is also expected to offer ranges at least as cheap as Tesco.

A Tesco spokesperson said, “We’re delighted to bring back our Festive 5 range for Christmas, offering customers great value on the vegetables soon to be on dinner tables up and down the country. We hope our combination of great quality and low prices will help customers at this busy time of year, with everything under one roof at Tesco.”
