Heck vegan

Flavour profiles in the range include beetroot, sweet potato and cauliflower

Sausage brand Heck is set to expand its reach into the plant-based meat alternative market with a new range of vegan sausages.

Its colourful range of vegetable-based sausages go on sale in Asda from Thursday (30 August), followed by listings in Sainsbury’s from mid-October. The launch of the sausages follows the success of Heck’s vegan meatball range, which has been rolled out during the past 12 months and has outsold some of Heck’s meat-based products in Waitrose, the supplier said.

The lineup includes The Beet Goes On beetroot, carrot & horseradish sausages; Super Greens spinach, kale, ginger & chilli sausages; Sweet Fusion sweet potato & Thai pesto sausages; and Bollywood Bangers cauliflower bhaji-style sausages (rsp: £3/six-pack).

The range had been in development for four years, said Heck, with production stepping up a gear in autumn last year after the brand invested £3.5m in overhauling its old sausage plant to become a dedicated meat-free production centre.

“The sausages are made recognisable as having real ingredients and real veg protein because we wanted to make sure people knew exactly what was going into their food,” said Heck co-founder Jamie Keeble.

“The process is similar to making meat sausages but getting a sausage that tastes right and has good texture takes time because there are so many more ingredients. There is a huge groundswell for plant-based sausages and burgers and I can really see a future where the majority of our production is vegan and vegetarian.”
