Princes will launch the UK’s first MSC-certified cans of sustainable Western Pacific tuna by the end of the month.
The tuna is sourced from the Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) fishery - the world’s largest sustainable tuna purse seine fishery - and will be available in 160g Princes tuna chunk cans and selected four packs.
The introduction follows the recent addition of MSC salmon and mackerel to the Princes range. Plans to introduce tuna from the PNA fishery to the UK was first announced by Princes last autumn.
“We are delighted this product has reached consumers after a considerable effort from all parties involved,” said Princes marketing director Neil Brownbill. “We are fully committed to the quality, integrity and long term sustainability of the seafood we sell and are very pleased and proud that this product carries the MSC ecolabel”.
The tuna is processed at a Princes factory in Mauritius, and will also carry the the logo of Pacifical, the global tuna marketing organisation set up by PNA.
“This is a really important step for sustainable fishing,” said MSC programme director for the North East Atlantic, Toby Middleton.
“Princes is supporting a ground-breaking fishery that’s working across eight countries to preserve tuna stocks for generations,” he added. “And by expanding its MSC certified tinned products, it’s also helping to make sustainable fish accessible to all shoppers. Great news for fish lovers and the environment”.
