Lidl surprised hospital maternity staff by decking out their ward with decorations, a Christmas tree and stockings, and handing out gifts.

Staff and patients at Leicester Maternity Hospital were given candles, truffles and a Yamaha keyboard.

It was the result of a Facebook competition in which Lidl offered to ‘upgrade Christmas’ - the tagline of their festive ad campaign - and asked followers to nominate someone deserving.

Sue Gill, one of the Leicester maternity staff, was nominated by her daughter Hannah Gill.

“Like so many NHS staff this Christmas, mum works throughout the festive period and I think it’s really important that their hard work is recognised,” said Hannah.

Lidl UK head of communications and CSR Georgina Hall said: “Lidl’s Christmas campaign celebrates all the wonderful upgrades that happen over the festive period, and who better to treat to a festive makeover than hard-working midwives and new mums.”
