Tonic Heath was this week castigated by the ASA for making unauthorised health claims.
In an Instagram reel, the supplements brand claimed its Rest & Recover soluble tablet was “the best sleep supplement on the market”. It also insisted ingredients such as magnesium and lemon balm helped to “ease stress, improve sleep, and support muscle recovery”.
The ASA was having none of it and banned the ad, telling Tonic Health to ensure future health claims were authorised by the Great Britain Nutrition & Health Claims Register.
That Insta reel was still online at the time of writing. But once it’s a goner, fans of unscientific nonsense can turn to The Good, the Bad & the Healthy, the recently launched podcast from Tonic Health founder Sunna van Kampen. In the latest episode, Are Seed Oils Killing Me?, he makes the frequently debunked claim that rapeseed oil and its like cause “inflammation in the body”.
It’s a talking point that’s been kicking around for about five years, typically repeated by conspiracy theorists and peddlers of pseudoscience. And US health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr.
Van Kampen, whose degree is in marketing, then declares he’s not interested in “debating what the science says”.
It’s bizarre stuff.
So is his recommendation in the episode ‘10 Ways You’re Being Tricked in the Supermarket’: to pick up a 10-pack of cheese slices as an on-the-go source of protein.
Then comes a startling revelation: own label cream cheese is cheaper than Philadelphia. Who knew?!
