The charity provides workers in the industry with financial and emotional support

The East of England Co-op has donated £4,000 to grocery worker charity GroceryAid.

The contribution will help to provide one-off, non-repayable crisis grants to grocery industry colleagues across the UK through the charity’s financial assistance programme.

The national charity also gives emotional and practical care to workers in the sector.

Last year, GroceryAid supported 15,784 people by offering everyday, free, confidential advice and practical support.

“Emotional and practical support for grocery colleagues has never been more important,” said Nikki Insley, head of membership, community & insight for the East of England Co-op. “We are acutely aware that the coronavirus crisis has impacted our colleagues, and grocery industry colleagues around the UK, not just in work, but personally.

“It’s been a busy, stressful and worrying time. GroceryAid’s services are indispensable. Because they’ve been established for over 160 years, focusing solely on supporting the grocery industry, they’re true experts in what they do.

“Our donation will help to support even more colleagues in need, providing essential grants at a time when these frontline, key workers need it most.

“We know many of our colleagues have benefited from GroceryAid’s support. It’s a privilege to give something back and help the charity reach even more people.”

GroceryAid welfare director Mandi Leonard said: “I would like to thank the East of England Co-op for their generosity. This will make a difference to hundreds of grocery industry workers facing real hardship. The £4,000 they have donated will help us to extend the reach of our vital support.”
