jimini's edible insects crickets

Jimini’s has won another UK listing for its range of edible insect boxes.

Selfridges will follow Fortnum & Mason and Planet Organic by stocking ready-to-eat boxes containing grasshoppers, mealworms and crickets.

Billed as a ‘tasty alternative source of protein’, The Grasshopper comes in Pepper & Dried Tomato, Greek Spiced, Fruity Curry and Paprika (rsp: £6.20/10g); The Mealworm in Sesame & Cumin, Imperial Soy and Garlic & Herb (rsp: £5.85/18g); The Cricket in Smoked Onion BBQ and Mango (rsp: £5.85/14g).

Jimini, which has 250 listings in Belgium and France, was launched in 2012 by friends Clément Scellier and Bastien Rabastens, who were inspired by the reality TV show I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here.

It has also launched a range of dried fruit and almond bars, made with cricket flour, which are available in Fortnum & Mason in banana & dark chocolate, apple & cinnamon and dark chocolate & fig (rsp: 2.40) and apricot, goji and chia variants (rsp £2.50).

Insects are being hailed by some as a more sustainable protein than meat, because insect harvesting requires very few raw materials in comparison to animal farming.

Jimini believes its products could be a big hit in the UK, which is an “open-minded market, ready and eager to try new foods”, according to Raphaëlle Browaeys, Jimini’s communication manager.

Jimini’s will be showcased at the BBC Good Food Show Summer London event on May 20 and 22.
