Kerrygold Honey Spread - a blend of butter and honey - has been axed less than a year after launch because of poor sales, it has emerged.

Brand owner Adams Foods told consumers on the Kerrygold Facebook page in late December that it was no longer viable to produce Kerrygold Honey Spread because consumer demand for the product had failed to meet “the necessary volume that was required for us to meet our minimum production runs”.

The product, launched in April 2011, disappeared from shelves in late November, having previously been stocked in 188 Asda, 112 Tesco and 60 Morrisons stores.

“Kerrygold Honey Spread was launched with limited distribution, and despite being genuinely innovative and satisfying a consumer need, sales were lower than anticipated,” Adams Foods told The Grocer this week. The company added it would now concentrate on growing its other Kerrygold SKUs.

Adams Foods also announced this week that it had started selling Kerrygold 100% Softer in the UK mults again six months after it was delisted by Sainsbury’s. The spread has been available in 155 Sainsbury’s stores since the beginning of this month.
